This is a bracelet I made that will be going to my April trivia winner, Erin, in addition to the stickers I’m sending her way. Yes, as you can see I’m still a little behind. I have yet to give Jenn, my May trivia winner, her prize. Sorry gals.

So as you can see, there are a few crafty bones in me.

I’ve been knitting for almost 6 years now. I love the feel of good yarn between my fingers. and the colors! I’m a sucker for beautiful palettes of yarn. Equipped with some fine yarn and a handy set of needles, my knitting season usually begins in early November just when it starts to get cold.

That said, my repertoire has been limited to scarves. Just scarves. Why? Because they’re relatively easy. They’re straight and are pretty even with a simple knit/purl stitch.

So this season, I thought I’d expand my knitting horizons and try knitting a hat:

It turned out pretty good, if I do say so myself! Wouldn’t you agree?

Until, that is, one tries to wear it. It’s actually big enough to fit an elephant’s head. That or someone with an obscenely huge head. Or Siamese twins joined at the temples?

Below, my masterpiece is photographed underneath a hat knitted by a friend for people with normal-sized heads:

I’ve proudly shown my hat to several friends, some of whom are experienced knitters, crocheters, and overall craft goddesses. They were all very kind and tried to find other creative uses for my hat. Here are some suggestions:

  • a hat for someone with dreadlocks (if only I’d used red, green, and yellow yarn)
  • turn it upside down, line it, sew handles, and voila! it’s a purse!
  • a butt warmer
  • a carrying cradle for a small dog or a cat
  • a lamp shade
  • Do you have any suggestions?
